Garagecade News
JULY 6, 2019: I’ve discovered another small bug in one of my layouts. This time it’s the Diamondplate layout and the bug had to do with the gameslist (logos or text) appearing through the marquee window when there is no art present (my test-bed has “NO ART” placeholders hence the reason I didn’t detect the issue prior!). I figured I would take the opportunity to add controller and button info options as well as a few other tweaks while I was at it. The result is Diamondplate IV. You can find the updated Diamondplate blog post HERE.
JUNE 28, 2019: I was recently made aware of a bug in the SDAMax II Attract-Mode layout where the wrong static image was appearing when using the Up-Down scrolling option. This bug has been squashed and as a bonus I’ve added both controller type and button count options if you’re interested. The old SDAMax II page has been updated with SDAMax III info and download link. You can find that blog post HERE.
JUNE 27, 2019: I have released my first “plug-in” for Attract-Mode… it enables “Now Loading” screen functionality. It comes with 20 different “Loading” screens and it’s very easy to add your own. It works in both horizontal and vertical mode. You can read more about it HERE. While it’s been very quiet on the dedicated arcade front, I’ve been keeping busy by putting together a brand new MAME rig from the ground up. I have a LOT more writing to do to get that post up however… but keep your eyes open!
APRIL 28, 2019: I’ve released my first (and likely only) Attract-Mode layout designed specifically to use as a DISPLAY MENU. For those who weren’t aware, there is functionality in Attract-Mode for menu of the different “Displays” you have configured. This menu also can utilize custom layouts. This is one of those. If you’ve not used the display menu functionality in Attract-Mode, I invite you to pop in a check out the videos I’ve put up on how it all works. Click HERE for more info.
APRIL 9, 2019: It seemed to me that the ARpiCADE community could us a guide of sorts on how to modify ROMLISTS for the purpose of changing emulators or making custom ROMLISTS and what not… I decided to put something together. You can find it HERE.
APRIL 6, 2019: And as a follow-up of sorts to the ‘Opacity’ vertical layout I released last week, here is ‘OPACITY WIDE’ … a horizontal version of the layout. You can check it out HERE.
APRIL 5, 2019: A few months back I upgraded the Golden Tee Fore/Silver Strike Bowling 2007 cabinet replacing SSB 2007 with Silver Strike Bowling 2009. You can read about the upgrade at the end of the GT Fore/SSB blog post HERE. I also posted a few more photos in the gallery within.
MARCH 30, 2019: You can find my brand new vertically oriented attract-mode layout “OPACITY” HERE. Enjoy!
MARCH 27, 2019: It’s been three years since I last updated the Shooter Showcase cabinet… the clock has now been reset with the addition of Invasion: The Abductors to the mix. You can read about it at the bottom of the Shooter Showcase blog post HERE. Next, I’ve added my latest Attract-Mode layout to the AM LAYOUTS section of the site… you can alternatively click HERE to go directly to the Shuffle & Slide page.
MARCH 18, 2019: The latest addition to the Garagecade is now pretty much complete. With it comes a slight change to the layout of the garagecade (as reflected by the image map at the bottom of the page). I’d like to introduce the garagecade’s first “gun recoil” shooter… Point Blank 2.
MARCH 10, 2019: I’ve updated the Diamondplate Attract-Mode front end layout to version III and the SDAMax front end layout to version II. Both now include favorites, a progress bar, genre and player # graphics, a more comprehensive settings menu, new color options as well as a few other tweaks here and there. You can read more about it them in the AM LAYOUTS section of the site.
FEBRUARY 16, 2019: After a whole boat-load of work by both myself and fellow enthusiast guntherm, the latest iteration of the popular Attract-Mode layout SDArcade has been released. If you are a fan of the original, or any of the updates since, I am sure you will be more than pleased with the changes made in SDArcade 4.0. You can read more about it (and download it) HERE.
DECEMBER 27, 2018: I’ve uploaded my latest Attract-Mode front-end layout … if you’re a fan of the SDArcade layout you’ll probably like this one as well. You can check it out HERE.
DECEMBER 13, 2018: Life has taken over due to the holidays and life obligations and what not, as such, there has not been a whole ton going on in the garagecade. My original Horizontal MAME finally decided to stop working… and rather than mourn the loss I dropped a spare ARpiCADE I had sitting around in and loaded it up with nearly 100GB of ROMS. I’ve been debating bothering with an actual write up on the ordeal as it was quite uneventful… we’ll see. I also just released the latest update for the SDArcade front end layout I’ve tweaked over the months… you can get it from the AM Layouts link at the top menu or by clicking HERE.
OCTOBER 15, 2018: FINALLY … i’ve added some garagecade photos for 2018! You can find those photos HERE. There has been many changes to the garagecade since the last series of photos were taken including more than one game departure as well as new arrival. As for recent departures, both Warlords and Battlezone have left the building and can now be found in the GAMES SOLD section of the site. Finally, with games coming and going, the clickable “map” of the garagecade was updated.
OCTOBER 10, 2018: There has been a pretty significant change to the garagecade … yet there is another pretty significant change happening this Sunday. As of a couple days ago, the WARLORDS that once resided in the Idaho Garagecade is now a Southern Californian. That’s right, those guys ALREADY have the pick of the cabs, yet another Idahoan (well, since the tax stamp on the side of it was from Tacoma… Washingtonian moving South West. This Sunday I anticipate the BATTLEZONE will be loaded up … though this bad boy will be headed East from here… to Montana I believe it is (or was it Wyoming… I always seem to get those two mixed up). With those games departing, the layout of the garagecade will be changing a bit… more to come…
SEPTEMBER 25, 2018: I recently picked up an Arctic Thunder sit-down arcade game on the cheap… and managed to luck out on it! Read more about the latest addition to the garagecade HERE…
SEPTEMBER 17, 2018: Finally! After many many years… the very thing I have most wanted at least 2 months of the year for over a decade is finally installed… and just in time for the cool weather… >doh!< Behold… the AIR CONDITIONER!
AUGUST 12, 2018: Two to three weeks. That’s the approximate time it is going to take for the latest … and easily the most anticipated and desired addition to the garagecade to go “live”… This is something that has been over a decade in the making! It’s huge for the garagecade… stay tuned!
AUGUST 2, 2018: Nearly 90 days since my last post I’ve posted a little bit about four 19″ Vision Pro’s I picked up back toward the end of May, what I did with them, etc., as well as a few other tidbits of info about the comings and goings of the garagecade. You can read about that HERE. I have also updated both the Wizard of Wor and Multipede posts with updates about the monitor swaps each received recently. Aside from that, things are going pretty slow here during Summer mode.
MAY 8, 2018: The new “Attract-Mode Front End Custom Layouts” section of the site has been added. If you have a MAME cabinet, you owe it to yourself to check out Attract-Mode front end software. I use it for my two Pi3 “ARpiCADE” cabinets and I’ve sort of gotten a little “hooked” on making new front end layouts for it. You’ll find those in this new section which you can access via the top menu bar or by clicking HERE.
MARCH 16, 2018: I just finished putting together a custom Capcom themed ARpiCADE setup to be used in my Capcom Anthology cabinet (don’t worry… the Darksoft CPS2 setup is still in there as well!). You can read more about it HERE.
MARCH 14, 2018: The Lost World: Jurassic Park has been sold. It was an enjoyable game for sure, but I didnt’ really have a “place” for it in the garagecade. I’m still three games heavier than I want to be, I just don’t know what 3 games to try to sell. I’m also just about complete with an ARpiCADE setup for the Capcom Anthology cabinet… more on that will be posted shortly, until then, a sneak peek can be found HERE…
JANUARY 25, 2018: What can I say… the work I put in to the site the last couple days sort of kick-started be a little and I put together the ARpiCADE review I was planning as a companion to the VERTICAL MULTIGAME cabinet I just posted about the other day. The review includes a number of photos and even a couple videos I put together of the boot sequence/menu in action as well as the kickass screen saver the system employs. Be sure to check it out HERE!
JANUARY 23, 2018: There’s been a significant change enough in the garagecade to warrant changing the imagemap of the garage arcade below. I sold the largest game I had in my collection, the Police 911/911-2 machine. Frankly, I probably ended up losing a little money out of the whole deal, but frankly, the gain in space was worth it. The Police 911/911-2 page can now be found in the CABS SOLD section. With the exit of such a significantly sized game I ended up changing the general layout a little on the larger side of the arcade. I also did pick up a game right after Christmas… you can read about it HERE.
NOVEMBER 30, 2017: Having realized yesterday it’s been nearly a year since my last Garagecade Photos post, I rectified that situation by posting 28 brand new pictures of the garagecade as of yesterday, November 29th, 2017. You can find them in the GARAGECADE PIX section of the site. I have also re-acquired a multigame I gave to my niece/nephews a number of years back (yes, I paid them!). You can expect a write up on that cabinet somewhat soon as I think I’m going to drop an ArpIcade in to it… but that’s for another post. Also, I recently discovered that all the photo galleries on all pages that use them on this blog were not working properly. They either required a mouse-over to display the thumbnail or simply did not display the thumbnails AT ALL. I discovered a javascript issue with the Facebook plugin I was using and have since removed that plugin (until it’s fixed). If you poked around and found big empty blank spots where photo galleries should have been… they should be there now! 🙂 Enjoy!
NOVEMBER 3, 2017: It’s been a while since my last update and I figured it’s time for an update. Things have been pretty slow-going for the garagecade. I’ve not had any major acquisitions since the Wizard of Wor… but a few things have been acomplished. I’ve added a high score kit to the Warlords. Like the Wizard of Wor high score kit, it too is an “online” capable version from www.highscoresaves.com … I’m about 1/2 way complete with a review, however I wanted to hold off on the review until I am able to run some Cat-5 over to the two games and test/review the online component of the high score kits. Unfortunately, while one game is pretty close to my hub/switches, the Warlords is half way around the garagecade. It will get done however. I have a couple of projects that I absolutely need to make time at some point to complete (on top of running the wiring for the high score kits)… one being the sanding/painting of my Donkey Kong Remix cabinet (still), another being rebuilding of the 13″ monitor on the Baby Pac Man, and of course I still have the cap kit for the jukebox to install (going on 5+ years now… my god that kit is daunting to look at with it’s certified “sh*t ton” of components to replace.). So while the “new” projects are few and far between these days, I still have plenty of “old” projects to finish. Now that the temperatures are more conducive to working out there, I will be addressing them… stay tuned! (PS: I am still selling my Police 911/911-2 multigame… if you know anyone interested, hit me up!)
JULY 28, 2017: After years of complaint from my backside, I decided to upgrade my barstools from the hideously hard to the soft and comfy! Check out how I did it “on the cheap” HERE!
JULY 16, 2017: I’ve decided to make a little room in the garagecade by selling a few of my larger games. Up for sale are my Police 911/2 Multigame, Rush 2049 Special Edition, and Need For Speed Multigame. Clicking on the links will take you to my craigslist ad. If you mention that you saw the ad by clicking through my blog page, I’ll take $50.00 off each game. If you plan on attending Grinkfest 5 and need me to hold on to the game until October, I have no problem doing so… just ask.
JULY 10, 2017: I’ve updated the Wizard of Wor post to include photos and information about the control panel restoration for the project. There hasn’t been a lot going on (other than game playing) with the garagecade since last blog post, mostly because the garage is pretty warm. Even though it’s insulated, the temperature will get in to the mid 80’s when it’s over 100 degrees outside. The only “proper” solution to this problem is to install a split-mini AC system, however that’s quite an expensive proposition… though one that may happen one day regardless of expense. Until then, however, I get to deal with a rather warm garage in the middle of Summer and a pretty cool garage in the dead of Winter…such is life.
MAY 31, 2017: Yeah, it’s been slow. I really HAVE worked on the Donkey Kong Remix game, but not the physical cabinet work that so needs to be done. As I mentioned in my last update in February, I’d decided to multi the cabinet (the proper way!) and that has been done and things are working great, I just need to get to the damn physical cabinet work so I can post the final update. I don’t want to turn the Donkey Kong Remix post in to a three or four part post so you will have to wait for the details.
I’ve recent acquired a new cabinet. I bought it for “project” money thinking it was a “project” but it turned out to be a pretty darned easy to get up and going and in to the lineup kinda deal. Read more about it HERE. I have also changed the layout of the garagecade again with the new addition. The image-map on the main page has been updated to reflect the new layout.
FEBRUARY 26, 2017: No… I have not forgotten about the Donkey Kong Remix cabinet. I still plan on repair/restoring the cabinet and painting it a yellow color. The paint/materials are all here. There was a delay because of the weather… and, to be 100% honest, my laziness/and lack of desire (sanding is one of my least favorite activites in this hobby), but it WILL get done… eventually. For now, I’ve expanded my plans to include a Vector Labs Mult-Nintendo switcher and will be running 3 PCBs in the cabinet… Donkey Kong (Remix), Donkey Kong Jr. (eventually with Remix when it comes out), and Donkey Kong 3. I’ve already picked up the switcher as well as a few other pieces of hardware but I’ll get more in to that when I update the Donkey Kong Remix blog when I’ve completed. I also was able to pick up a new keypad for the Rush 2049. The keypad that was on it was pretty darned bad… you had to really press exceptionally hard to get the numbers to register. I couldn’t pass up a brand new keypad for $25 on ebay (keep in mind that Midway Skins Golf also used the very same keypad). The difference is simply… incredible. SO worth it. The Warlords is in it’s home and has been running pretty much trouble free. I’ve found that playing 2 player is actually quite a blast. I am currently waiting for a couple parts to move forward with the DK project. I’m also considering the purchase of yet another Terminator 2 machine. Of course I don’t have the room… but the price is right and I might not be able to pass it up.
JANUARY 28, 2017: In addition to a new blog post about the Atari Warlords Upright I picked up just before Christmas, the garagecade layout has been changed to accommodate the new game (the shape of the cabinet required, no, DEMANDED that it be situated in line with the Multipede and Asteroids Deluxe (for those not in the know, Warlords, Centipede and Asteroids Deluxe are pretty close to being the same exterior shape except for the different shaped “notches” taken out of the sides. (The same can be said about Dig Dug, Arabian, and Kangaroo). I still have to finish up on my Donkey Kong Remix cabinet (sand, paint, etc)… however with the extreme weather we’ve been having (in addition to my laziness), I will likely not be getting to it until Spring at least.
DECEMBER 1, 2016: I’ve added 18 new photos to the GARAGECADE 2016 post located in the GARAGECADE PIX section of the site. Scroll to the bottom to see the latest photos from the 1-car side of the garage.
NOVEMBER 24, 2016: HAPPY THANKSGIVING! I was recently asked about how I heated and cooled the garagecade on KLOV. I realized, with some embarrassment, that I didn’t have an “ABOUT” the Garagecade type of page here. That needed to be corrected and it has. You will find the new ABOUT page at the right in the menu up top… or you can be lazy and click HERE.
NOVEMBER 16, 2016: I’ve added a review of the custom Donkey Kong Remix artwork I had done at Escape Pod. You can read about it HERE.
NOVEMBER 8, 2016: The garagecade has a new arcade game project… Donkey Kong Remix. Read all about the ups and downs of this project HERE. There is also a new poll … feel free to take part at the bottom right.
NOVEMBER 6, 2016: There has been quite a bit of change that has happened in the Garagecade since my last update here. First, I sold the Multi Donkey Kong cabinet to a local church. It’s running an Arcadeshop PCB and is perfect for what they needed it for (a kids “fun room”). You can now find the Multi Donkey Kong blog entry in the GAMES SOLD section. Along with the Multi Donkey Kong, you can also find Omega Race, the Defender cocktail cabinet, and one of the Rush the Rock machines there as well. These games were sold to fellow collectors during the Grinkfest arcade event in mid October. The main imagemap of the layout of the Garagecade that can be found on the main page has been updated to reflect the new layout of the garagecade. I also took a number of photos of the larger side of the garagecade after the layout change and posted them in the GARAGECADE PIX 2016 section of the site. Finally, I recently picked up a Donkey Kong project that I will be using to create a custom Donkey Kong Remix cabinet. I will be posting my first blog post on this project soon… check back!
AUGUST 25, 2016: I learned a bit of a lesson when the high score / memory backup system fails, losing over 2 years of my high scores and times. Read more about this misfortune in my update to the DUMP THAT BATTERY post by clicking HERE (update is at the end of the page).
JULY 31, 2016: The Golden Tee 2005 showcase cabinet was picked up. It’s crazy just how much space those showcase cabinets take up… They are almost as large as a twin driver. I’ve also managed to arranged a few other sales come October for Grinkfest 2016. Omega Race, one of my Rush the Rock games and the Defender cocktail I recently acquired will all be leaving the garagecade in October. They will be missed (especially you Omega Race… you’ve been with me for quite some time now)… but they come and they go.
I was finally able to source a Rush 2049 force feedback motor. I found it semi-local as well (Mountiain Home… about a 50 mile drive). I picked it up as untested for $40.00 cash. So about $55 or so after fuel costs. I wasn’t sure if the motor was causing the fueses to blow or if there was an issue with the PCB… I hoped for a motor issue… rolled the dice and… it appears the motor was the problem! I did notice the motor I put in to it felt about 1/2 as “loose” feeling as the other motor (powered off). I’ve played at least two dozen games thus far without the fuses blowing. I’ve even played on high/hard feedback without issue whereas the other motor would blow within a few games on “LOW” feedback… and would blow within a single game at high feedback. I’m still crossing my fingers but it appears the motor solved the fuse blowing issue.
JULY 24, 2016: Not a lot has been going on in the garagecade. It’s been pretty hot and it gets a bit uncomfortable in there (not quite “hot” but warm enough to discourage doing “work”). One of these days I’d love to be able to add a split AC unit. In any case, I did manage to sell the Golden Tee 2005 Showcase cabinet I’d picked up recently. I decided to sell it rather than convert it to the mult-shooter… just too much work moving over 6 games and getting all the wiring correct. I am very glad to be getting my space back (they’re picking it up this week). I also managed to fix the shifter issue I was having with my Need For Speed cabinet. It turned out to be a broken solder joint (ground)… the wiring for that shifter isn’t the best laid out. I’d love to sell another game to make a little more room to be honest… I am actually considering breaking up the Rush the Rock twins… but I am not anywhere near sure.
JULY 1, 2016: Sometimes “life” throws you a surprise… as this time yesterday the last thing in the world I’d think I’d have sitting in my living room was a Defender cocktail.
JUNE 28, 2016: There has a change made here… after almost a decade, I’ve decided to change my garagecade “name” of sorts… to simply “Idaho Garagecade”. I figured it was time for a change… the old name came up as sort of an inside joke originally and it just stuck. Time to move on. I’ve been referring to my gameroom (located in the garage) as a garagecade for many years… If you google “garagecade” this blog comes up pretty high on the list… it seemed appropriate to go with the name. The www.asshatarcade.com domain name will remain for the time being (at least until February next year), but I will also be adding a new URL (to be determined) at some point. I also wanted to invite you to check out another long-term ongoing project of mine: www.arcadedatabase.com. (link no longer active… site attempt failed)
JUNE 19, 2016: Needless to say, there’s been a few changes happening over the last day or so. The site is in somewhat of a state of flux in some regards, thank you for your patience.
JUNE 13, 2016: I have uploaded 18 new garagecade photos. I focused on the rows that have changed since February… this include the addition of Asteroids Deluxe, The Lost World, and the Golden Tee Fore 2005 showcase cabinet I recently acquired. You can find the new photos in the Garagecade Pix section of the site or you can click HERE. Also, please express your opinion with our new online poll at the right. The first question asked is whether I should narrate the upcoming garagecade video walk through I am going to put together or whether I should let the games do the talking.
JUNE 8, 2016: I’ve added a SEGA Lost World – Jurassic Park shooter to the garagecade… you can read about that HERE. I also recently acquired a Golden Tee Fore 2005 in a Dynamo Showcase cabinet which you can read about by clicking HERE. With these two new additions to the garagecade I have also updated the navigation map located on the main page.
JUNE 3, 2016: There have been a couple of new additions to the garagecade… you can read about them HERE. I have removed the Subscription option from the main page… only two people used it thus far and since I put another Asshat Arcade facebook page together, I figured it really wasn’t necessary. If you’d like to know when I update this page, simply follow the Asshat Arcade Facebook page. I do appreciate all likes and shares as well. Thank you.
MAY 17, 2016: I had the honor of being the first person to test out the brand new CRAZY CLIMBER HIGH SCORE SAVE KIT by the folks at WWW.HIGHSCORESAVES.COM. I am quite impressed.
MAY 16, 2016: I have completed the refurb-job of the Asteroids Multigame with a new control panel overlay. You can read more about it HERE. Gyruss is no longer just Gyruss as I was able to source a Time Pilot PCB. Click HERE to find out more about this addition. Finally, I obtained a FREE Dynamo showcase cabinet… everything included including a Golden Tee Fore 2005 PCB that just needed a hard drive. I’ve since gotten it up and running thanks to the MAME team’s CHD files that are available out there. We’ll see what I decide to do with that monster. Finally, I am the FIRST to receive a CRAZY CLIMBER high score save kit from WWW.HIGHSCORESAVES.COM … I just got it today, and will be tinkering with it tonight. Expect a write up about it in the coming days.
MAY 7, 2016: The newest addition to the garagecade is an Asteroids Deluxe with a surprise… more can be read about it HERE. I have added a subscription form to the right of the main page. Basically, if you want to be emailed when I post updates like this, please fill out the subscription. Yes, I know the SUBSCRIBE button is hard to read. 🙂 Finally, because of the addition of the Asteroids Deluxe cabinet, I had to change the layout of the garagecade slightly… the new layout is reflected on the image map on the main page.
MARCH 11, 2016: The multi-shooter showcase blog post has been updated with lots of new information. You can read the original post and the updates that follow HERE.
FEBRUARY 27, 2016: I updated the garagecade photos … you’ll find 10 new shots of the 2-car side HERE.
FEBRUARY 24, 2016: I updated the image map to reflect how the garagecade currently looks with Tron having been sold. Tron can now be found in the GAMES SOLD section of the site. I am making quite a bit of room in the large side of the garagecade… plenty of room to work on a project. What project depends 100% on what comes up. 🙂
FEBRUARY 21, 2016: I recently acquired a Need For Speed: Carbon upgrade kit which has been added to my Need For Speed multigame. Read more about it HERE.
FEBRUARY 18, 2016: There’s been quite a bit going on as of late… but I’ll keep it brief. First off check out the Capcom Anthology post as I UPDATED IT TODAY with photos/info on the new custom art package. In other news, I sold my Tron to a fellow collector… it will be picked up in the next couple weeks. Oh, and the lovely folks at Facebook suspended the account I was using to maintain the Asshat Arcade facebook page. I guess after 3 years they determined that “Frizzle Fried” wasn’t my real name. I haven’t decided if I am going to bother creating another page there…
